On the left, gesture drawings of a few turkeys in the corral. They were looking for bits of horse-feed on the ground, I guess. On the right, my first attempt at drawing a horse from life. Not great, but I posted it because on the same page I did a quick horse caricature that I kinda liked.

On the left, one of the many deer that wander through camp. They’ll pass by as close as 10 feet away – totally unafraid. The antlers are a bit of creative license on my part – weren’t more than nubs on the actual animal. On the right, a horse(?) skull that’s nailed to one of the uprights at the corral (a bit spooky) and a nice evergreen. Probably a Ponderosa pine, there are a lot of them up here. Might be something else, though.

Two more pages from training week: a few rough sketches of some of my coworkers practicing guitar together, and a random troll/ogre sort of thing. Might work up a few turnarounds or action poses on that one at some point this summer.
First sketches
July 14th, 2008After several weeks of frustrating camera and connectivity issues, I can finally start posting sketches. Victory! I don’t have access to a scanner at this time, so I’m using a camera on my sketchbook and tidying the results in Photoshop; when I return to civilization in late August, I’ll scan everything in properly and replace the images.
The sketch on the left is one of the presenters from training week, way back in early June – I believe he was from the either the New Mexico Dept. of Game and Fish or the National Forest Service. On the right are a stuffed and mounted deer and (I believe) antelope, also drawn during training week.
To explain, since I don’t think I have yet: I’m spending the summer post-graduation working out at the Philmont Scout Ranch in northeastern New Mexico. This is my 5th year working here, and the last for the foreseeable future. It’s a great place to work, and I’m working with a fun group of people; but the pay isn’t great, and I’m not really using my BFA, except in my free time (I’m employed as a cook). So in August, it’ll be back to the ‘real world’ and job-hunting.
